Bill
Yates & Friends
The Country Gentlemen Tribute
MasterShield Records
BY ROBERT STEELMAN
Bill
Yates, who spent better than 18 years as a member of the Country Gentlemen, has
assembled a stellar cast of performers and friends to help him make this
tribute. Listening to this album gives you the impression that you are listening
to another version of the originals – it’s just that good. Bill brings in Mike
Phipps, who does a great job of imitating the voice of a young Charlie Waller
with lead and low tenor vocals. Other musicians include Darren Beachley, guitar
and vocals; Dave Propst, mandolin/vocals; Kevin Mallow, fiddle; Dave MacGlashan,
bass; Scott Walker, banjo; and Mark Clifton, resophonic guitar. If you’re a fan
of the Country Gentleman you’re sure to recognize all of these numbers. Some are
more of effective than others, but all of them are good. BMP
