Daniel
Grindstaff
April's Fool
BY PAUL PRIEST
At
23 years old, Daniel Grindstaff’s first solo outing comes out of the gate
running full throttle. Surrounded by friends and heros, Daniel has put together
a mature effort that belies his youth. The title track, written by the great
Sonny Osborne, is one impressive piece of music. This disc is much more than
just a "banjo record." Each song sounds lovingly selected. Too Old To Die
Young, featuring Terry Eldredge, Sonny and Bobby Osborne, is an instant
classic. The trio you hear was recorded after Sonny’s retirement and may be the
last example of The Osborne Brother’s majestic harmony ever recorded. Daniel’s
treatment of timeless instrumentals such as Sourwood Mountain, Bending The
Strings, and Big Country is first class. He respects the classic
structure of the tunes, but breathes a youthful fire into them that makes them
all sound brand new.
