Dave
Evans
Pretty Green Hills
Rebel Records
BY ROBERT STEELMAN
A
quick check of the track list on this project will reveal some pretty familiar
tunes, but don’t be fooled into thinking these are just rehashed versions of the
same old standards. In Dave Evans’ hands these cuts become fresh again. Songs
like East Virginia Blues, which gets a minor facelift, takes on new life
among others in this collection. Apart from the traditional and more familiar
fare, there is the Dixie and Tom T. Hall-penned title cut and The Year That
Clayton Delaney Died from Tom T.’s country collection. Fiddle enthusiasts
will be pleased with the presence of Bobby Hicks on most of these cuts. The
Evans-Hicks version of Soldier’s Joy is just about as good as it gets.
Also participating are Bo Isaac/vocals; Mike Garris/bass; Merl
Johnson/guitar/fiddle/mandolin/bass; Randy Thomas/guitar and mandolin; and Dave
Minor/Dobro. BMP
