David
Davis & The Warrior River Boys
Troubled Times
Rebel Records
BY ROBERT STEELMAN
Troubled
Times is the group’s second release for Rebel Records and it’s a mighty fine
one. Davis can boast ties right on back to the beginnings of bluegrass - his
Uncle Cleo was the first Bluegrass Boy - and Davis plays the music like it’s
meant to be played - excellent and very tasteful. Davis is joined by Owen
Saunders, fiddle; Daniel Grindstaff, banjo; Adam Duke, guitar; Marty Hays, bass.
The band reaches across opposite ends of the bluegrass spectrum from numbers
like the rambunctious John Henry, Jr. and the haunting Evening Prayer Blues.
There is also a fresh rendition of the gospel A House Of Gold. Others include
Ballad Of Sarah Malone, Chancellorsville, The River Ran Black, Milwaukee Blues,
Filling The River With Tears, Muddy Water, The Lonesome Whistle, and Willow
Valley.
