DEAN SAPP & HARFORD EXPRESS
I Can Hear The Blue Ridge Calling Me
Mastershield Records
BY JOE ROSS

With a large amount of original material, Dean’s 11th release has six of his original compositions and two written by his brother Ben. Besides Sapp’s guitar and vocals, the album features Dan Curtis’ mandolin, Ben Sapp’s banjo and Darin Hirchy’s electric bass. Dobroist Tim Graves guests on a few cuts and particularly complements slower songs like The Old Altar. Elkton Knights was written by Curtis, who succumbed in January 2006 to an illness at age 71. The band now has Baltimore Dobro player Russ Hooper and mandolin player Bobby Van Hoy and its collaborative result is a warm sound and feeling. Their charm is based on moving songs reminiscent of bluegrass music’s bygone days, and not trying to over-produce them.
