The Goldmine Pickers
Lonesome Gone
BY HAL COTTRELL

The Goldmine Pickers is a four-piece band from Goshen, Indiana with a sound seated in the Celtic tradition. The CD starts with the soothing tones of the bouzouki, which gives an insight to the delightful songs that follow. Although the instrumental work was superb, with Sean Hoffman providing some excellent fiddle work throughout the entire project, the vocals could have been fine tuned. The words were hard to understand and not mixed clearly. The vocals are reminiscent of Bob Dylan and the lyrics lack any traditional structure. The syncopated rhythms on The Split are more new age than bluegrass, traditional Celtic or old-time music. But all the songs are very well constructed musically. Other selections include Queen’s Confessor, Mud, Sean’s Favorite, Don’t Leave Me Here Tonight, Barroom Waltz, After Yeats, Far From Shore, Iroquois Waltz and more. BMP
